1984 Jean-Pierre Favino Modele #10 Rio

1984 Jean-Pierre Favino Modele #10 Rio
This excellent Favino was built during the "transitional" period of the Favino workshop. Jacques Favino had already been retired for many years, but his son Jean-Pierre continued to make guitars in the style of his father. Not long after this, Jean-Pierre began experimenting with various design changes which culminated in the modele S that he makes today. Generally these early 80s JP Favinos are considered a great deal as they are identical to the guitars made by JP's father Jacques, but go for several thousand dollars less. A great way to get a classic sounding guitar for a little less!

If you like the classic Favino sound on the early Boulou Ferre recordings like Gypsy Dreams and Pour Django, Bireli's early recordings (Swing '81 and Routes to Django), or Han'sche Weiss/Lulu Reinhardt (Lulu Swing) then this is the guitar for you!

The condition is very good. There are a few top cracks. One of the top cracks is on the bass side of the fingerboard which will need to be cleated at some point. There is also a crack between the sound hole and the end of the fingerboard which has been cleated. One more top crack runs from the bridge area to the tailpiece but has been repaired with some glue.

The guitar looks very good, it doesn't have nearly as much checking or dings as most guitars of this age. Just some light checking here and there and a few almost imperceivable dings. Some of the sunburst finish has also rubbed off the neck in a few places. At one point there was a pickup of some kind but all that remains is the endpin jack. The top has a beautiful amber tone that you only see in finely aged instruments.

The guitar is setup nicely with 3.5mm action. Doesn't buzz a bit. The sound is clear and powerful with the classic Favino low end. This Favino has a bit more high end sparkle than most and is not as nasal as others. A really nice balance...would be especially nice for recording!

The serial # is 941. This guitar was made for Per Frydenlund who is the rhythm guitarist of the Hot Club de Norvege. His name is written on the label.

This guitar has a spruce top, gorgeous highly figured Brazilian back and sides (rare for an old  Favino), and has a 3 piece maple neck with a sunburst finish (common for Favino from the late 70s through the mid 80s). It has an original tailpiece with a French centime (penny) set in the center. Those nostalgic for pre-Euro French currency will love this little one of a kind ornament! This Favino was built with JPs special 666mm scale. So it is a bit easier to play then the longer 675mm Favinos.
