Since I began my gypsy jazz journey a couple of years ago Michael Horowitz and his shop have acted as a beacon of information and resources that have proven indispensable. More recently I took the leap and bought a vintage guitar from Django Books. I was a little nervous because I had never owned a vintage instrument and it was the most expensive instrument I've ever purchased. (I purchased online so was not able to try it out). 1950s Joseph Di Mauro Heart Hole

1950s Joseph Di Mauro Heart Hole

The elder Joseph Di Mauro was part of the mass emigration of master Sicilian luthiers (Busato, Oliveri Anastasio, etc) who left Catania in the early 20th century. In the 1930s Di Mauro and his countrymen setup a series of shops on the East side of Paris and quickly adapted their skills to making jazz guitars in the Selmer Maccaferri style. Di Mauro was certainly one of the most successful and long lasting of these Franco-Sicilian luthiers as his guitars were widely adopted by players of many styles. Notable players include Moreno, Boulou Ferre, Patrick Saussois, Samy Daussat, Jean-Yves Dubanton, and even Pat Metheny! Di Mauro guitars were produced continuously until the early 90s, first by Antoine and then later by his son Joseph.

This guitar was built by Antoine Di Mauro's brother Joseph, not be confused with Antoine's son of the same name. The distinctive heart shaped sound hole clearly marks it as his work. This model is extremely rare with very few known surviving examples.

This guitar has the customary three piece neck and arched back that was typical of Franco-Sicilian makers such as Di Mauro, Busato, Bucolo, etc. The top is spruce, the neck is maple with an ebony spline, and the back and sides are made from a stunning piece of birdseye maple!

This instrument possess the much coveted dry, classic tone that is only found in the best vintage Gypsy guitars. Each note is crisp, clear, and well defined with the kind of character and complexity that only comes with age. Projection is excellent as the Di Mauro style three brace design really lets the top move.  I particularly like the low-mid "growl" this guitar produces as it gives chordal work a wonderful attitude that is lacking in other, more "polite" instruments.

This instrument is in very good condition, with no cracks or structural damage of any kind. It does have a few cleats which secure the seams of the four piece top, but those appear to be original and are typical of Di Mauro's work. The guitar appears to have been refinished and now has a light, satin finish which is both attractive and sonically beneficial. The tailpiece was replaced with a more modern nickel one and a set of Schaller Classic Deluxe tuners have been installed. It appears that the guitar once had a soundole pickup of some sort which was later removed. A few chunks of the rosette are missing and have been repaired. A bigtone pickup has also been installed.

A Joseph Di Mauro of any kind continues to be one of the best bangs for the buck in the vintage Gypsy market. This legendary Heart Hole model is a rare find that will earn you endless bragging rights without breaking the bank!

Pros: quick communication, finest quality setups and instruments, courtesy, incredible selection

However, I had faith that Michael would send me a great guitar. All I can say is that the guitar arrived in a condition and with a playability level even higher that Michael had described in his summary. I almost feel like he downplayed the condition in his description. I couldn't be happier with my purchase and hope to be back soon to add to the collection. Michael is not only a great musician and scholar but he knows how to run a business and keep his customers happy too! Go with Djangobooks , you won't regret it.
