1981 Jean-Pierre Favino

1981 Jean-Pierre Favino

This excellent Favino was built during the "transitional" period of the Favino workshop. Jacques Favino retired sometime in 1978, but his son Jean-Pierre continued to make guitars in the style of his father. This guitar bears the Jacques Favino label but was most likely built by JP Favino. During the 1980s Jean-Pierre began experimenting with various design changes which culminated in the modele S that he makes today. This guitar is the old modele #10 which became legendary in the hands of so many of the top players from 1960s-70s. Generally these late 70s/early 80s JP Favinos are considered a great deal as they are almost identical to the guitars made by JP's father Jacques, but go for several thousand dollars less. This instrument is a great way to get a classic sounding guitar for a little less!

If you like the classic Favino sound on the early Boulou Ferre recordings like Gypsy Dreams and Pour Django, Bireli's early recordings (Swing '81 and Routes to Django), or Han'sche Weiss/Lulu Reinhardt (Lulu Swing) then this is the guitar for you!

This unique Favino was made for the well known Corsican guitarist Paulo Quilici. Quilici is one of the formost performers of Corsican folk music, having produced numerous recordings of classic Corsican waltzes, boleros, tangos, etc. This is the only mapled bodied Favino model #10 I've ever seen which was not a Macias model. We can only assume that Quilici ordered this guitar to suite his own personal preferences.

This guitar has a spruce top, maple back and sides, and has a 3 piece maple neck. This Favino was built with Jean-Pierre's special 666mm scale which makes it a bit easier to play than the longer 675mm Favinos. The nickel tail piece and Schaller tuners are original.

The sound of this guitar is pure Favino! It has the unmistakeable Favino tone which features warm, nasal mids; full bodied lows; and rounded highs. This guitar is quite dry and free of bothersome overtone ringing, making it very clear and easy to hear in group settings. It has character galore...play a chromatic run and you instantly get the gusty, hard fisted sound that the Alsatian/German Gypsies like Moreno and Hans'che Weiss are famous for. Favinos like this love to be played hard, and the more force you play this guitar with the better it sounds. Chordal work is snappy with lots of punch and attitude which is all underpinned with a rich, tight lowend. This guitar certainly does not lack personality, that is for certain!

This instrument is in very good condition. There are a few top cracks which have been cleated and are stable. One is just above the soundhole on the treble side and another longer crack runs from the bass side moustache to the rim. Another smaller crack runs from the soundhole to the bridge. The frets have a little wear but still have plenty of life left in them.
