This is a great guitar. I had a chance to try it out next to another great guitar, the VRB that Djangobooks has in stock just now, and I loved that guitar as well but it is well known how good those are. 2013 Dupont Hot Club

2013 Dupont Hot Club

This is Maurice Dupont's top of the line Selmer copy. No detail is overlooked with both the materials and workmanship being of the highest caliber. The track record of this instrument speaks for itself, as so many of today's top players use the Vieille Reserve model, of which this Hot Club model is a variation. Bireli Lagrene recorded the first two Gypsy Project CDs with this model. Patrick Saussois, of Alma Sinti fame, Stephane Wrembel, and Romane also play Dupont VRBs.

This guitar includes:

-A 40 year old aged Spruce top

-Highly Figured aged Madagascar Rosewood back and sides.

-Deluxe, closed DM tuners

-The top has a real pliage (i.e. the wood was bent over a hot iron like the old Selmers. Almost all other Selmer copies have forced tops which aren't as punchy).

The sound and playability of this instrument are the best I've ever seen for a new guitar. The only thing better is an actual vintage Selmer or Busato in good condition which is nearly impossible to find and would cost twice as much. The Dupont Hot Club model is a guitar that plays and feels like a new guitar, but has the clarity, punch, and tone of an old seasoned instrument. I know of no other luthier that builds a guitar with these qualities.

This guitar is best for those who like the Selmer sound. Each note is rounded and bell like with a smoky complexity only found in the best of instruments. This guitar also cuts like a knife and requires very little force to do so. Players with a light touch will be surprised at the volume this guitar can generate. All in all, this is the most traditional Gypsy sound you can get in a new guitar. If you like a more modern Gypsy tone then you should consider a Hahl or a JP Favino. Chord punches, tremolos, and other comping techniques sound great on this guitar because they cut so well.

This guitar is setup perfectly with easy playing 2.8mm action and 11 gauge strings. There are no buzzes and every note is clear as a bell. If you like to play fast, this guitar is for you. It is among the easiest playing Gypsy guitars in the shop.

All in all, this instrument combines the best of the old with the best of the new. No wonder so many pros play this exquisite model, it's every Gypsy guitarists dream!

2013 Dupont Hot Club

This is a great guitar. I had a chance to try it out next to another great guitar, the VRB that Djangobooks has in stock just now, and I loved that guitar as well but it is well known how good those are. It was some weeks ago now that I played these guitars and I find it's the Hot Club is the one that is still on my mind. - - - I was reflecting on just how to characterize the difference, thinking about the valuation of these excellent instruments, trying to put it into perspective ... and it occurred to me that if I wanted to look as good as the VRB sounded, I'd just about have to spend the same amount on my clothes as on the guitar in order to match its beautiful and very refined tone. But the Hot Club, with respect to the excellent VRB, has a different quality about it, actually another quality, almost another dimension; I can only explain it indirectly, by saying that while I wouldn't be shy about dressing up and heading uptown with this thing, it's got a dangerous sort of sizzle in the sound that makes me want to pull on a pair of tattered jeans, an old black leather jacket and boots and go get myself and this gorgeous guitar into some trouble! - - - The Madagascar rosewood is gorgeous, easily as beautiful in it's dark-chocolate way as any coppery-coloured slab o' Braz, really if there's a prettier guitar I want to see it, and I haven't yet - and no need for CITES docs for the traveling player! - and of course the construction is perfect and the dynamic range is exactly what we all need and it's loud and deep and clear. But it is the sizzle in the sound, something very interesting and stimulating in the top end, and a character in the tone like a person with an accent in their voice that catches your ear and makes you want to listen to them talk all day long. A very special guitar, one I'll likely not forget.
