Maurice really pulled out all the stops on this one! I can't think of many Duponts that have sounded this good. It has a strong, thunderous voice that you normally only hear in the best vintage guitars. A real powerhouse with great tonal character as well.
This is Dupont's much lauded copy of the classic
Busato design. It is a near exact copy, with the classic Busato
proportions: 670mm scale length and a 16 1/4" body size. It
also features the famous Busato bombe (top arch) which is more curved
then Favinos or Selmers. Like the originals, this guitar also has a
beautifully arched back.
This guitar has a Sitka spruce top, Brazilian Rosewood back and
sides, ebony binding, a three piece walnut/ebony neck, a vintage finish
and the deluxe Busato tuners. The spruce top has a touch of bear claw.
The sound is very close to the originals, and in many cases is almost
indistinguishable. Like the vintage Busatos, this guitar has a bright,
dry tone with a very clear, bell like high end. Busatos are built for
cutting power and Dupont has definitely succeeded in achieving that.
Generally, Busatos are some of the loudest Gypsy guitars ever built and
this guitar lives up to that tradition. This Royale is a bit more "open" in tone than some of the others I've had which were bone dry. If you like a dash of "echo" in your sound than you will like this instrument.
The tone of the Royale is a bit lusher than the other models, with more
rounded highs and a bit more midrange fullness. Regardless, it still
has the supreme cutting power that Busatos are known for.
