Django Reinhardt - Two Is Company - Complete Studio Duets 1937-1942
DJANGO’S duets with STEPHANE GRAPPELLI,
BILL COLEMAN, EDDIE SOUTH, LOUIS VOLA,
ANDRÉ EKYAN, MICHEL WARLOP and IVON
DE BIE.

Includes Django’s only recordings playing
violin!!

A previous album on this label (Django Reinhardt In Solitaire DRCD
11286) was devoted to Django Reinhardt’s rare and amazing guitar
solo recordings. The present volume compiles all of his studio duets
with other musicians. His collaborators include some of the regular
members of his group (the celebrated Quintet of the Hot Club de
France), like Stephane Grappelli, Louis Vola or André Ekyan, as well
as American visitors who were touring Europe, like Bill Coleman and
Eddie South.

Django was severely injured during a caravan fire when he was 18
years old, which resulted in the inability to use two fingers of his left
hand for the remainder of his life. After overcoming terrible pain, he
re-taught himself how to play the guitar and developed a unique
technique that matched his new physical limitations. It is amazing
enough, given his condition, that he could make such wonderful
group recordings, but it is even more impressive that he dared to
cut solo and duo sides. No one, however, would suspect that Django
had a physical handicap by listening to him play.
Stephane Grappelli backs Django on many tracks, playing his second
instrument after the violin: the piano. The most surprising moments
of this collection, however, occur on “Vous et Moi” and “Blues en
Mineur”, which were recorded in 1942. Here Django puts the guitar
down for a while and picks up the violin to play two duets backed
by a pianist! His solo on the blues displays what he could do with
Grappelli’s instrument. These two sides are the only existing examples
of Django’s violin playing.
