1960s Jacques Castelluccia

1960s Jacques Castelluccia
Now this is one exciting guitar! A true sleeper....something with the qualities of the best Gypsy guitars in the world but at a player's price.

This fantastic instrument was built sometime in the 1960s by Jacques Castelluccia. Castelluccia was one of the many famous Italian luthiers to make his name in France (along with Busato, DiMauro, Catania, Anastasio, Bucolo, etc.)

While the price of guitars made by Busato (along with other Italian makers such as Favino and Maccaferri) have skyrocketed in recent years, Castelluccia's have been largely overlooked. But after playing this guitar, I think anyone would agree that Castelluccia was also capable of building guitars on par with his more famous contemporaries.

This instrument features Selmer like dimensions: 670mm scale, a slightly larger 16" body, but is only 3 3/4" deep. At 3.5 lbs it is among the lightest guitars I've ever had in the shop. Much of this is due to the unique Castelluccia design which uses only three top braces and no back braces. The back, sides, and neck are Cuban mahogany, the top is cedar, and the fingerboard is rosewood. It features ivoroid binding and a rosewood bridge.

The condition is astounding for a guitar of this age! It has a few scratches, dings, and pickwear, but no cracks. There are holes for an endpin jack and bout mounted volume knob which have been filled. There is some minor binding separation and a spot on the heel where the binding appears to have been replaced. The frets are new and the tailpiece is a somewhat tarnished Saga one with a faux tortoise insert.

Playability is great and compares well to any new guitar. It is currently strung with 11 gauge Argentines and has 3mm action.

This is one of the most unique sounding Castelluccia's I've had come through the shop. It has this wonderfully dry, mid focused, "boxy" tone that has so much character and mojo. It has that wonderful mix of attitude and beauty that you'd expect to hear around an Alsatian Gypsy campfire. Anything you play on this instrument immediately sounds very old world, like something you'd hear on an forgotten bootleg of some anonymous 1960s Gypsy virtuoso. Each note has a very strong fundamental, giving your lead lines a pure, clear sound. There is almost no overtone ringing, and the bass is fat, yet defined and detailed. If you're looking to get away from the more sugary sweet sounds of contemporary instruments, than this is your guitar! It transports you to another time and place and quite frankly I've never had anything that sounds quite like it.

This model was made famous by Dorado Schmitt who played a similar Castelluccia in the Bireli Lagrene's Live Jazz a Vienne  DVD.
