Bireli's Outside Playing

dominicleewedominicleewe London, United KingdomNew Altamira Mod M

Can anyone explain what Bireli is doing from 0:55-1:03? I've been trying to decipher what goes through his mind when he plays that but couldn't come up with anything.

    I hear this:
    first part : A half-whole diminished, (or think A7b9#11)
    second part, [ from 0'.59"] : B, or B pentatonic then B7:
    leading to the E7 chord [ at 1':03" ]

    /,`.-'`' -, ;-;;'
    |,4- ) )-,_ ) /\

Ha yeah love it when he gets outside like that. No clue what he is thinking. Above my pay grade. b9, 6th, b5, b7. There is a B triad in there at 1:01 that gives A 6th, b5, 9th.

I can't figure out how to get that harmonic at the beginning. Anyone know??

I thought the title of this was referring to Bireli playing al fresco...

    Again it is diminished
I can show you when we hang
The B triad as is the scale thing afterwards is basically a A Lydian (major with a flat 5).

    "What's that you're saying?" I'm sorry, I only speak English - I don't understand a word you wrote... LOL

Yeah i’m Hoping I sound smart but I have no idea what i’m doing. In seriousness take a major scale and raise the 4th a half step and that is that sound. So that A major with a raised 4th over the A chord works but may take a while for your brain to process that sound or maybe not.The B triad he is playing exists inside that scale where it did not before you raised the 4th.

My girlfriend just read the title of this thread and asked 'Well then why doesn't he just go in and join them ?'.

My answer was long and complicated as usual.

Seriously though I think that Denis covered a lot of the applications of the diminished scale in GJ in one of his Hyperhip media DVD's.
