Quite a demo... I'd apply for your class at once, if you lived in the same continent. There's structure and there's no rushing ahead, two things I find important and difficult. Great work!

Nice!!
What's the name of your student? How long has he been playing GJ?
Is he the young guy that went with you to Samois last year?
Please give us the details of the recording session.
Great work!

Wow!
A year and a half? What do you teach him? (seriously tell me! please!) He's good.
Maybe you should release a lead playing DVD.
I met Ivan at DjangofestLA, nice guy, plays a lot with ****, tell him hi from Mexico next time you see him.
Great clips, Thanks for posting them.
Enrique.

Dennis? Pretty please? Just your basic aproach to teaching.
Do you teach them licks, solos, exercises? Gypsy secrets? Books?
Thanks.

I was listening to the Stompin' at Decca clip and I really like the guitar solo.
However I came across a phrase he plays on the fourth measure, Eb7; that I can`t explain:
---6--4---------------------------------------
----------5--4--------------------------------
-----------------6--4-s-3-0-0----------------
--------------------------------1-2-0-1----
----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------
Or is it?
---6--4------------------------------------------
----------5--4-----------------------------------
-----------------6--4-s-3-----------------------
----------------------------5--5-----------------
----------------------------------6--7--5--6----
-------------------------------------------------
Aside from the position and the slide (if there' s even one) I don' t get where this lick comes from, what chord shape?, etc. Looks a bit like Db-6 or F#9 but...

Also the very first lick he plays at the start of his solo sounds like the one Django plays in Dinah. (I omitted the slurs):
-------0-2-3-2-0---------0-2-3-2-0--
----3-----------------3--------------
But more like this:
-------0-3-2-0-----------0-3-2-0--
----3-----------------3---------
Is this right or there is in fact that first F# in your student`s playing?

Thanks for your help.

Isn't that just an Eb7 with a couple of approach notes? This shape?

-4
-3 (or 6 for a dominant chord)
-5
-6
-

best,
Jack.

hi harry,

well with my students who want learn the style , the first thing i try to work on is playing good rhythm guitar, then i show them some basic "essential" vocabulary, and how to understand them and apply them to various situations.. once they become familiar with the vocabulary, i try to get them to figure out music by ear instead of with books/tabs/etc... then we look at slightly more advanced concepts, like actual improvisation, ear training, phrasing, etc....
