Using sidechain to deal with amplifying problems?

Wondering if anyone has tried using a sidechain compressor to deal with the inherent amplification problems of the gypsy guitar.

I play with a group that has a piano/bass/drum rhythm section and when I switch to doing single note lines I of course get buried. Using volume switches/pedals/channels is a pain. Has anyone successfully used a sidechain compressor to bring up the single note volume without squashing the great rhythm sound?
