As I was searching for some traditional eastern european tunes, I found this traditional version of Dark eyes. It's sung in Russian, here's the translation below. I thought you might enjoy it :

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Dark eyes, flaming eyes
They implore me into faraway lands
Where love reigns, where peace reigns
Where there is no suffering, where war is forbidden

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Without meeting you, I wouldn't be suffering so
I would have lived my life smiling
You have ruined me, dark eyes
You have taken my happiness forever away

Dark eyes, burning eyes
Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
For sure I've seen you at a sinister hour

Sounds like you've got a 13 Dec 1940 recording. It's available on a few box sets (the inexpensive JSP Paris & London, for example).

    Django & Joseph: guitars
    Hubert Rostaing: clarinet
    Pierre Fouad: drums
    Tony Rovira: bass

I'm pretty sure there's a few transcriptions floating around; I'll take a look.

    best,
    Jack.

edit: Or am I thinking of '47? Anyway, Michael covers a lot of Django's comping ideas for Dark Eyes in Gypsy Rhythm. Check it out! You can even see and hear a preview of the Dark Eyes work here.
