Are these meant to be practiced in straight 8th notes or swing?

The audio examples are in straight 8th notes. However, I do not think that the intent of the book is to memorize the whole etude and then apply the lines to other tunes as straight eighth notes.

So I guess the intent is to practice in straight 8th notes to memorize the shapes and sounds without getting bogged down in the timing aspect to start.

Then apply these in a more musical and swing feel.

Yes. That is what I got out of reading the notes in the books.
