Cool story on Fresh Air about the Electro-Swing wave in Europe, which mashes up dance music with swing music (Caravan Palace and others.)

http://www.npr.org/2013/10/23/240259909 ... y-electric

There are some free compilations linked to in the story:

The first tune is a pretty wild mash-up of the Beatles with Sidney Bechet, Barbara Lea, and of course, Django. You can find that here: https://soundcloud.com/eliazar/the-beat ... go/s-yBLkN

Enjoy!

I still don't understand this stuff. Are there any real musicians involved or just hipsters sampling and wearing floppy caps?

There's real musicians involved in some of the acts, like Caravan Palace or The Electric Swing Circus, and sampling hipsters involved in others (whose names i don't know, 'cos there's no real musicians involved).

It's a lot of fun in England, youngsters dressing in flap dresses & bow ties doing the charlston all night to swing music.

I am wondering on a lot of this stuff whether royalties need to be paid when a groove or phrase is lifted off a record or is it short enough that there are no legalities.
