Bay Area Gypsy Jazz Club Meeting @ Keith Holland Guitars
Jan 20 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Have you been bitten by the gypsy jazz bug?

Then come and be a part of the first Gypsy Jazz Club in the South Bay at Keith Holland Guitars. The inaugural meeting will be on Saturday, January 20th 2018 from 1:00 to 2:30pm with monthly meetings to follow. The club will provide the venue and opportunity to learn, jam, meet other players and have fun. I will be hosting the club meetings along with Robert Witmeyer, who will be teaching a few concepts and coaching players on how they are used in a song. As the club grows, we will look into opportunities to bring in luthiers and other experts to speak on various topics related to Gypsy jazz. The meetings are open to all with a $20 donation. If you know anybody who would be interested, please feel free to share this e-mail. Please RSVP to me so we can get an accurate head count.

Thanks,

Ron La France

Django’s Birthday Party @ The Royal Room
Jan 27 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Gypsy jazz musicians from around Puget Sound will celebrate Django Reinhardt’s 108th birthday with an evening of music. The concert will feature two bands, Nuages and Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’, plus guest appearances by other top Seattle Gypsy Jazz musicians, including Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews on clarinet and saxophone.
Django was an itinerant Gypsy who earned international acclaim in the 1930’s. Many of his compositions became jazz classics and he is considered one of the top guitar soloists of all time. Duke Ellington referred to Django as “the most creative jazz musician to originate anywhere outside the United States.” Decades later, Jerry Garcia said, “Even today, nobody has really come to the state that he was playing at…nobody plays with the whole fullness of expression that Django had.”
Nuages features the fiery soprano saxophone of Michael Gurule–it’s like Sidney Bechet and Django Reinhardt got together to jam! Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’ evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Gypsy campsite. Says violinist Ranger Sciacca: “Our goal is to make this a really fun show, featuring as many great musicians and different instruments as we can!”
There is no cover charge, but donations will be accepted.

Gypsy Swing Club @ Keith Holland Guitars
Feb 24 @ 1:00 pm

The reviews of the first Gypsy Swing Club are in!

“Lots of great little tips and stuff for the people like me who are on the newer side of things. I really enjoyed the time because the last year learning GJ for me has literally only consisted of sitting in my living room alone playing. It was really great to get a chance to get out of the house and hang out and play with a big group of others from the area. I look forward to the next one and hope to have more time after next time (had to leave fairly quickly) to build some relationships and maybe find some more frequent jam partners.”

Thanks to Brad Herman for this wonderful synopsis!
